The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time debate coach and associate director of the speech and debate program. Candidates should have a minimum of three to five years of experience coaching debate at the high school or college level. Experience teaching speech and debate classes is preferred. They should have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community and be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment. College Prep is a community of life-long learning and actively encourages and supports the professional development of all of its members.
The debate coach will co-teach two sections of Beginning Speech and Debate and work with varsity team members during other class periods and after school. Their primary focus will be Policy Debate, but they should be interested in and willing to assist with other events, including Public Forum Debate and speech. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, critiquing practice speeches and debates, overseeing research and argument development, tournament coaching, and serving as a judge, driver, and chaperone at competitions. The College Prep Speech and Debate Team attends an average of 30 competitions each year, divided equally between local events and long-distance trips. Class sizes average 16 students.
Candidates should be eager to spend additional time getting to know and help students outside of the classroom. College Prep teachers also take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, mostly during the 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. school day. Teachers thrive at College Prep when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly knit school that embraces equity and inclusiveness, and actively seeks to strengthen its ties to the greater Oakland community. The salary is competitive. Benefits include medical and dental coverage, a retirement plan for eligible employees, and most pleasantly and collegially, a prepared lunch every day.
