    FULL-TIME TEACHING POSITION—Middle School Science, 2018-19


    FT/PT:                        100%, beginning Fall 2018

    Status:                        Exempt, At-Will

    Reports To:                Assistant Head of School


    Gateway School is seeking to hire a full-time teacher to teach middle-school science beginning fall 2018.

    Gateway School, in beautiful Santa Cruz, CA, is a CAIS accredited, independent K-8 day school of 220 students that serves children with the intellectual curiosity and self motivation to thrive in an academically challenging environment. Our school is notable for its innovative instruction and programs, close student-teacher relationships, supportive parent community, and small classes.

    Science Program

    Gateway School is seeking to hire one full-time instructor to teach our seventh-grade and eighth-grade Science courses (currently articulated as Life Science and Physical Science).

    The middle school program is in the midst of an exciting evolution as we consider options for integrated teaching and learning in science and math, and we are especially interested in candidates who can teach both subjects as we plan for future program innovations. The middle school science program engages students with a hands-on curriculum that is grounded in real-world scientific examples. Through high-interest thematic units, students receive a solid foundation in the scientific disciplines of chemistry, physics and biology. Units are chosen to provide broad based exposure to such areas as: biochemistry, evolution & genetics, human biology, marine science, astronomy, and environmental science. Each unit includes investigation, discussion, activities, writing, and connections to the real world.  The position requires:                                                               

    • A thematic teaching approach with the inclusion of cooperative/collaborative activities and projects
    • A deep understanding and appreciation of the developmental norms of adolescents
    • Familiarity with team building, class meeting structure, and conflict resolution strategies
    • Teaching and planning as part of a team of teachers
    • Various extra-curricular duties that reflect the needs of the program and the school (such as electives, advisory, yard duty, admissions events, and planning and chaperoning class trips)




    • Bachelor's Degree
    • Successful classroom teaching experience at the middle school or high school level
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Ability to communicate effectively and proactively with all members of the community, including students, faculty, staff, and parents                                                                    
    • Interest and/or experience in interdisciplinary instruction in science and math
    • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
    • Current teaching credential
    • Knowledge and understanding of independent schools
    • Familiarity with 1:1 iPad programs in a middle school or high school environment


    Salary and benefits are competitive. Salary is dependent upon years of teaching experience. The benefits package includes employee coverage for medical, dental and vision insurance, paid holiday time, sick time and 403(b) retirement savings plan.
