The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a half-time History teacher and a half-time Assistant Director of Admission beginning in August of 2019. This position entails teaching two sections of either our 9th grade Asian Worlds and/or our 10th grade The Atlantic World courses and working half-time in our Admissions Office as an Assistant Director of Admission. Candidates should be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rich academic environment that highly values equity and inclusiveness.
Qualifications and desired characteristics:
● Bachelor’s or graduate degree in History
● Three to five years experience teaching history at the secondary or college level
● Experience working in an office in a front-facing position
● Passion for working with both high school students and prospective eighth graders and their families
● Strong organizational and communication skills
● Patience, flexibility, and a good sense of humor
● A strong interest in working in a diverse, multicultural community
The College Prep History program is unique, innovative and rigorous, and includes three required year-long courses: Asian Worlds (9th grade), The Atlantic World (10th grade), and The U.S. and the World (11th grade). History teachers work closely with one another, honing and reshaping the curriculum. Beyond required courses, the vast majority of our students choose to take one or more history electives their senior year. These include Constitutional Law, Ancient and Medieval, and Linguistics. History Section sizes average 16 students. Students use both texts and teacher-produced material in classes.
As an integral member of the admission team, the Assistant Director of Admission represents the school and assists in the crafting of the incoming class by interviewing prospective students, providing tours to parents, assisting with on-campus visiting programs, attending high school fairs, and serving as a member of the Admission Committee. Candidates should have contagious enthusiasm for helping prospective families as they navigate through our admission process.
