Oakwood School is a K-12 coeducational day school in North Hollywood, California that opened its doors in 1951.  The school has remained faithful to its original mission ever since: to create a diverse educational environment where young people are partners with the adults who teach them and learn from them; where the best means of preparing students for the future is to immerse them in the present; where a healthy learning environment requires joy and humor as well as rigorous intensity; and where students’ intellectual and aesthetic depth – along with their capacity for empathy and moral courage – emerge out of authentic engagement with their teachers, one another, and the world around them.

    The Opportunity

Oakwood School is seeking a part-time music teacher (grades 7-12) for the 2019-20 school year. The ideal candidate is comfortable teaching any level of music and is expected to work with a diversity of learners from the beginning strings level to advanced orchestra students; the specific teaching assignment will consist of one or two classes each trimester, and will likely include a combination of middle school and high school classes. Responsibilities include teaching all beginning string students, working with intermediate string students, and conducting the High School Orchestra. Additionally, the incumbent will work to build the instrumental music program at Oakwood and coordinate cross-disciplinary opportunities within the performing arts.

We are seeking candidates who will engage with our students in a progressive, constructivist manner while ensuring sufficient mastery and development of sound musical practices. Other responsibilities include attending department and faculty meetings, parent conferences and open houses; regular communication with parents and administrators; and occasional supervisory duties.

Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of relevant experience teaching music in grades 7-12. Master’s degree preferred with proficiency in conducting, string performance, and teaching. Proficient computer skills with Google Drive and Microsoft Windows office products. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to prioritize and carry out assignments with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness.

Please forward your resume and letter of interest to Liz Willis, Academic Dean at Oakwood School:
