Cal-ISBOA is partnering with Liebert Cassidy Whitmore to bring you an important virtual event in November, the "California Legal Symposium." We'll focus on legal issues facing independent schools with an emphasis on California.

Preliminary topics include:
How to Reduce Your Liability Through Positive Labor Relations
8:30am - 9:30am

Presenters: Donna Williamson & Oliver Yee

Labor and employment claims pose significant financial, operational and emotional costs and challenges for schools. The risk of such claims has exacerbated during this difficult moment of the COVID-19 pandemic. Compensation, retention, and workplace culture considerations are especially critical to teachers and staff now more than ever. We will share tips and best practices on addressing these and other labor relations considerations to help you maintain a positive and successful workplace environment.

Hiring, With COVID in Mind
9:45am - 10:45am

Presenters: Grace Chan and Julie Strom

Searching for and hiring new employees is always a challenge, but never more so than during a pandemic! This session will help business officers and others involved in the hiring process navigate these challenges while minimizing liability for the school.  Topics will include the impact of vaccine mandates on job postings and the interview process, candidate inquiries regarding telework and accommodations, updating job descriptions to address post-COVID skills such as technological fluency, and practical “do’s and don’ts” during the interview and onboarding process.

Reasonable Accommodations
11:00am - 12:00pm

Presenters: Jennifer Rosner and Brian Walter

The remote working and learning environments developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic added to the already complex playing field of possible accommodations for employees and students.  This session will navigate through the interactive and accommodation processes required of schools in light of these new possibilities, including triggers to know your duty to accommodate, verification of disabilities, tactics for handling seemingly endless leaves, and best practices to minimize liability.

Legal Update
12:30pm - 1:30pm

Presenters: Michael Blacher and Brett Overby

Keeping up with changes to the law and evolving best practices can be challenging!  This interactive workshop is designed to inform independent school business officers of current and emerging legal issues by exploring relevant cases, statutes, and other developments from California and around the country.  Business officers will leave this workshop with insights that will help them meet their obligations and manage developing trends.
