JOB DESCRIPTION:
Berkeley Hall School (BHS) is seeking an experienced professional who serves as a student advocate to promote the healthy development of children and families in our community. Supervised by the Assistant Head of School: Middle School, the Wellness Support Specialist works closely with the Assistant Heads of School, Learning Support Specialist, Nurse and other wellness team members to support school wellness initiatives, social and emotional learning, restorative practices and mental health issues.
This position includes, but is not limited to, the following duties:
Supporting Students and Families:
- Collaboratively handle student behavior response issues in tandem with teachers and AHoSs.
- Identifies students in need of social and emotional support in consultation with faculty members, and works in tandem with administration and teachers to provide appropriate support/interventions.
- Supports the faculty with inclusive practices, incorporating students whole selves into the classroom culture, including their families and cultural practices.
- In collaboration with AHoSs, teachers and the Learning Support Specialist, supports the creation and implementation of behavior support plans for students as needed.
- Provides short-term individual and small group counseling pertaining to school based behavioral, emotional, social, self-regulation, and mental health issues.
Programmatic support (documentation, testing and resources):
- Identifies and manages online resources for parenting; communicates common strategies and language used at school for home continuity.
- Supports classroom-based prevention and programming related to mental health and students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
- Supports all-school DEIB programs, initiatives, and efforts.
- Consults with parents/guardians, teachers, support staff, administrators, medical professionals, and community mental health personnel.
- Maintains relationships with qualified therapists and/or community agencies and provides referrals to families as appropriate.
- Provides guidance and professional development opportunities in social and emotional learning and mental health to faculty and staff.
- Provides parent/guardian education on relevant topics.
- Support faculty with Morning Meetings and middle school advisory programming.
- Foster a culture of care in the Wellness Center.
Administrative duties:
- Maintains documentation, logs, and appropriate communication with parents and students.
- Supports implementation of wellness related strategic initiatives: Reaccreditation, strat plan, behavioral response protocol, logic model, DEIB.
- Attends all appropriate school meetings and events, and chaperones as needed.
- Actively participates in school enrollment management initiatives.
- Follows guidelines for fulfillment of duties as described in the Employee Handbook.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- School counseling, mental health work, or prior experience working with student discipline and restorative justice practices in primary and middle schools preferred
- Master’s degree preferred
- Experience working with teachers, families, and children required
- Minimum two years of experience working in schools in a similar capacity preferred
- Evidence of remaining current in field
- In harmony with the teachings of Christian Science
- Live Scan and TB clearance

- Knowledgeable about the developmental stages of elementary children and early adolescents
- Pays close attention to detail (particularly as it applies to our evolving health and wellness landscape)
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Ability to engage in deep and thoughtful work, amidst regular distractions
- Emotional agility and high emotional intelligence required
- Ability to work in ambiguous situations with grace
- Effective collaboration skills and team player a must
- Ability to give and receive feedback timely and effectively
- Willingness to engage in and proactively support all school DEIB and cultural competency work
- Ability to engage in school high-level decision making and discussions
- Has a working knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite
- Knowledge of MacBooks, iPads and associated applications and technologies
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Regularly sits, talks and listens
- Be able to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
- Regularly uses close and distance vision
- Works at desk and computer screen for extended periods of time
- Turns, bends, and reaches
- Works in traditional, climate-controlled office environment
- Ability to walk 60-acre campus
Terms of Employment:
This is an exempt position. Competitive compensation commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes, but is not limited to, medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, long-term disability, and a retirement plan (with up to 7% employer match). The regular workday is 7:15 am–4:00 pm. Occasional early morning, evening, and some weekend work is required.
