    Position Title: MS Orchestra Teacher/ Productions


    Department: P-8


    Reports To: Principal of P-8


    FLSA Classification: Exempt


    FTE (Full-Time Equivalent): 100%


    Schedule of Duties: 10-Month


    Salary: $82,000- $164,000 annual/salary depending upon level of education and experience


    Position Purpose: This is a full-time position teaching instrumental music to middle school students in addition to staging and producing various music programs and serving as an advisor.


    Specific Expectations for P-8 Employees: In addition to regular teaching responsibilities (including but not limited to preparing curriculum and grade reporting, class preparation, student reporting – report card narratives, parent-teacher conferences, supervision duties, classroom substitution, advisory, elective teaching, office hours, outdoor education/field trips, etc.), the following duties and responsibilities are required as part of the P-8 faculty/staff workload:


    Responsibilities beyond the boundaries of teaching assignments that foster a growth mindset in order to continually improve our P-8 program such as professional development and trainings, attendance of or participation in, mandatory meetings and/or events (Director's Days, Open Houses, accreditation meetings, etc.) are required as directed by your supervisor. All employees will be paid appropriately and according to current law. If staff are required to work outside of regular work schedule; non-exempt employees will receive overtime pay, as eligible.


    Essential Functions


    • Responsible for teaching instrumental music to middle school students and directing the middle school band with courses not limited to band, orchestra, jazz band, beginning band, and beginning orchestra.

    • Teach and demonstrate on all band and orchestra instruments.

    • Supports and when requested, provides music in regular and special performances for school programs, Masses and prayer services, community activities, concerts, and festivals.

    • Manage inventory and instrument sign-out.

    • Prepares course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts and other assignments for various music courses.

    • Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other required records.

    • Evaluates and grades students' class work, assignments, and papers.

    • Compiles, administers, and grades examinations.

    • Works with department head in regard to planning, evaluating, and revising curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.

    • Uses effective class management techniques to ensure effective learning.

    • Maintains regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.

    • Responsible for other faculty duties including serving as an advisor.


    Qualifications


    • A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools and professional behavior based in it. Commitment to equity and inclusion.

    • MA degree and 5 years of experience at lower/middle school level, or experience equal to it, required. Teaching credential and experience in an independent school and/or Catholic school strongly preferred.

    • Strong teaching ability; enjoy working with children and adolescents.

    • Able to develop and teach an articulated band curriculum.

    • Ability to organize and execute a comprehensive middle school band program, including concerts, performances often outside of school hours.

    • Must demonstrate a collaborative spirit and collegial nature to support a positive working relationship with other fine arts teachers, the Theater Technical Director and Operations.

    • Demonstrated success in collaborative planning with other music teachers, the Fine Arts Department and middle school classroom teachers.

    • Familiarity with California content standards in music.

    • Ability to prepare all students for musical performances throughout the school.

    • Recent successful experience in directing and producing instrumental music productions.

    • Ability and experience to oversee a department budget.

    • Strong and recent experience with all aspects of production including but not limited to selecting appropriate material and inspiring budding talent.

    • Commitment to work well with students and colleagues; willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the SHS community.

    • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking in English; additional skills in Spanish are valued and preferred.

    • Outstanding interpersonal skills and an obvious passion for instrumental music.

    • Willingness to adapt to an existing curriculum as well as contribute ideas to enhance the respective academic programs.

    • Excellent attendance and punctuality.


    Physical Requirements and Work Environment


    • Works in a fast-paced environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.

    • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time. Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled classroom environment.

    • Available and willing to attend and work some evenings/weekends.

    • Be able to occasionally lift up to 40 lbs. and regularly travel safely and comfortably over a 63 acre campus

    • Available and willing to attend and work on overnight trips on occasion.
