    Position Summary


    Position Title: Montessori Preschool Teaching Assistant – Long Term Sub


    Department: P-8


    Reports To: Montessori Program Specialist


    FLSA Classification: Temporary;Non-exempt


    FTE (Full-Time Equivalent): 100%


    Position Purpose: Assists lead Montessori teacher and program in the classroom.


    *This position will not count for any practicum or teaching experience but you will gain more experience working with students.


    Specific Expectations for P-8 Employees: In addition to regular teaching responsibilities (including but not limited to preparing curriculum and grade reporting, class prep, student reporting – report card narratives, parent-teacher conferences, supervision duties, classroom substitution, advisory, elective teaching, office hours, outdoor education/field trips, etc.), the following duties and responsibilities are required as part of the P-8 faculty/staff workload: Responsibilities beyond the boundaries of teaching assignments that foster a growth mindset in order to continually improve our P-8 program such as professional development and trainings, attendance of or participation in, mandatory meetings and/or events (Director's Days, Open Houses, accreditation meetings, etc.) are required as directed by your supervisor. If staff are required to work outside of regular work schedule, permission to work outside of the regular work schedule is required; non-exempt employees will receive overtime pay, as eligible.


    Essential Functions


    • Under the direction of Lead Montessori Teacher:

    • Help set up, clean and maintain classroom environment.

    • Help guide and assemble children during arrival and dismissal, and other relocation needs eg, fire drills, campus walks, recess.

    • Assist with lesson preparations e.g., prepare materials, set up activities.

    • Leading class in non-curriculum daily circle activities e.g., calendar, prayer.

    • Assist in maintaining overview of children during class and recess times, including helping children with materials, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.

    • Support lead teacher in classroom management using positive discipline techniques.

    • Participate in monthly lesson planning.


    • Communicate daily observations of children with the lead teacher either through personal record keeping or regular meetings with the lead teacher.

    • Assistants completing their Montessori Practicum year will follow our yearlong pacing guide to complete their Montessori training.

    • Comply with school policies; attend professional development and staff meetings as needed.

    • Other duties assigned by principal and Montessori Program Specialist.


    Qualifications


    • High School diploma or GED equivalent; an Associate's degree or higher in Education is preferred.

    • Completion of some college coursework i.e. minimum of 12 Early Childhood Education units.


    • Enrolled in MACTE (Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education) Accredited Montessori Program. Prior experience working in a Montessori Primary (3-6 year olds) classroom is strongly preferred.


    • A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools and professional behavior based on it.

    • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.

    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with preschool aged children.

    • Compassionate and positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills.

    • Successfully pass a TB assessment/criminal background/fingerprint (LiveScan) clearance.

    • Proficient with office equipment and technology (i.e. laptops, copiers, Zoom, Gmail, MS Office Suite, etc.)


    • Valid first aid and CPR certification.

    • Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality.


    Physical Requirements and Work Environment


    • Ability to travel safely and comfortably across a 64-acre campus.

    • Be able to lift up to 10 lbs. regularly and occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.

    • Be able to comfortably transition between seated positions on the floor to standing in order to assist children.

    • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled school environment and in outside weather conditions, including heat and cold typical to the Mid-Peninsula in the Bay Area.

    • Abide by school's current and changing safety policies (ex: wearing masks, washing hands, etc.)
