Job Description
Redwood Day seeks an Associate Teacher who will partner with an experienced mentor teacher to support the social-emotional and academic needs of students within a core Lower School classroom. The ideal candidate will have a keen, continued interest in developing teaching skills alongside the guidance of a mentor and will have a strong commitment to assuming increasing responsibility within a classroom community.
Responsibilities
• Learn, on the job, about classroom management strategies, curriculum design, project-based instruction, learning differences, progress report writing, differentiated instruction, and other best practices in elementary education
• Assist the mentor teacher with parent/guardian communication and participate in parent/guardian/ student/teacher conferences; potentially lead portions of the conference at the direction of the mentor teacher
• Work collaboratively with the mentor teacher, the Lower School Director and/or the Dean of Students on student discipline related issues
• Assist with clerical tasks (copying, set up, clean up, bulletin boards, etc.)
• Participate in evening events such as Back to School Night, the STEAM Fair, etc.
• Supervise recess, lunch and/or other “duty” assignments (pick-up, drop-off, etc.)
• Supervise an assigned period of after-school study hall during the school year up until 4:30 p.m.
• Attend Associate Teacher meetings, All Faculty/Staff meetings and Faculty/Staff In-Service Days
• Complete tasks as part of the role and development of the Associate Teacher (e.g., observations, reflections, lesson and unit preparation, goal-setting, solo teaching)
• Potentially substitute for the mentor teacher, and occasionally other lower school faculty, when they are temporarily absent for illness or other reasons
• Help ensure the safety and hygiene of students
• Additional duties as assigned
Essential Requirements
● Bachelor's degree
● Commitment to working in a diverse learning environment that necessitates flexibility, professional behavior, a positive attitude, and a desire to enhance professional growth
● A demonstrated ability to work effectively with students age range 5-14
● Strong written and oral communication skills
Desired Qualifications
● Enrollment in (or completion of) a professional teacher training program (e.g. BATTI - Bay Area Teachers Training Institute) or other Master’s program
Schedule and Hours
Daily hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and Wed 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Pay Scale
The anticipated hourly rate the school reasonably expects to pay candidates for the positions of 1st, 2nd or 3rd Year Associate Teachers for the 2024-25 school year is between $27.00 and $29.45 per hour. These are 10-month, non-exempt positions and we have two positions available.
