    Job Description for Rock Band Instructor

    Cate School is currently seeking highly qualified rock band instructor candidates. The position will include close collaboration with performing arts colleagues while teaching all rock band courses and driving the vision for the Cate rock music program. For this position, the rock band instructor will teach two rock courses that meet twice per week: Tuesdays and Wednesday classes will be 2:10-3:15pm and Thursday and Friday classes will meet 1-1:55pm. There are several atypical weeks during the year when Tuesday and Wednesday schedule will shift to Monday and Tuesday. 

    The class emphasis will be on learning and rehearsing rock music, developing musical teamwork among students, and blending a solid rock sound geared towards performances. Each rock class will consist of 12-14 students and will be subdivided into two performing groups of 6-7 students. There will be rock performances several times during the year. In 2023-24, all of the rock bands performed on October 20, February 24, and April 19. Other gigs may also occur as opportunities arise, especially for the top group. For instance, one of our groups was invited to perform at the Avocado Festival on Oct 5. The rock instructor will serve in a professional manner, prepare for classes adequately, focus on the needs of the students, participate in grading and parent conferences, and contribute to the overall excellence of Cate School’s Performing Arts program.

    • guide and monitor student learning and growth through formative assessment and appropriate feedback

    • assign and grade class work, homework, tests, and assignments in a timely, fair, and consistent manner

    • maintain accurate and complete records of student's progress and development

    • participate in department and school meetings, parent meetings

    • communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and student needs

    • keep updated with developments in the subject area and with teaching resources and methods, make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities, and be willing to grow professionally and attend conferences

      • maintain a commitment to continuous professional growth through reflective practice, evaluative feedback, and evolving school needs

      • stay up-to-date with curriculum standards, developments in education, teaching resources and methods, and incorporate new learning into teaching practices

    In terms of education and experience, applicants for this position will have:

    • minimally a BS or BA in Music Performance and/or Music Education, or experiential equivalent

    • experience teaching high school music courses or experiential equivalent

    • demonstrated facility with or ability to learn LMS (Schoology, Veracross, etc.)

    • demonstrated commitment to / love for working with teenagers as a role model, mentor, advisor

    • demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion work

    • demonstrated commitment to professionalism, collaboration, and growth
