Job Description and Desired Qualifications
The lower school music program nurtures the love of music while laying a strong foundation for understanding musical concepts and developing musical skills. The program introduces students to the basic elements of music. These elements come to life through a diverse range of repertoire and learning experiences, which use speech, rhyme, games, singing, dance, movement, listening, body percussion and musical instruments (such as unpitched percussion instruments, boomwhackers, xylophones, and recorders). The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive musical background that includes performing and teaching, and a lens towards cultural competence when it comes to developing curriculum content. This individual will have a strong commitment to meeting the learning needs of each student, a teaching style that supports differentiation of instruction, a collaborative spirit, and an interest in building community in and outside of the classroom. This position begins in August 2024.
This is a full-time, exempt position
∙ Instruct lower school music classes in a dedicated music classroom: each class (two per grade) twice and sometimes three times per 8-day cycle
∙ Teach Redwood Day Chorus (after school) – Grades 4th-8th
∙ Direct four concerts and Lower School Musical – Grades 4th-5th
∙ Perform all other assigned school-related duties (e.g. recess supervision, meetings, etc.)
∙ Additional teaching responsibilities may include an 8th grade Advanced Topics Music class or other Music based extracurricular classes (based on program needs, teacher strengths, and music passion)
∙ Collaborate with the 6-8 music faculty
∙ Maximum class size is 24 students
Essential Requirements:
∙ Bachelors of Arts (in Music or comparable degree)
∙ Three to five years’ K-5 classroom music teaching experience
∙ Choral directing experience
∙ Instrumental proficiency (piano, guitar, recorder)
∙ Candidate must have effective classroom management skills
Desired Qualifications and Traits:
∙ Teaching credential or Masters’ Degree (MM) in Music (preferred)
∙ Orff levels training and Kodaly knowledge helpful
∙ Ability to teach strings classes desirable but not required
Pay Scale:
The anticipated salary range the school reasonably expects to pay candidates for the full-time position of Lower School Middle Teacher $72,227 to $108,627, depending on factors such as experience and education.
