    Position: Medical Assistant 

    Department: Health Center 

    Reports to: Medical Director 

    Status: Non-Exempt

    Pay Range:$23-33/hr.

    Essential functions in the role:

    Function: Communication Skills

    Standard: Communication expected of the Medical Assistant includes writing, speaking, hearing, and strong communication skills with internal constituencies and the public. Electronic communications via computers, printers, interfaces, and fax machines are utilized in this job role. Inter-relationships define the broad level of communication needs involved in these technical responsibilities. 

    Examples:

    • Greets and manages check-in of students

    • Follow-up and ongoing communication via text, email, and phone calls with families, health center, and Medical Director for appointment scheduling, medication management, and other support. 

    • Prescription/radiology fax follow up

    Function: Critical thinking and behavior sufficient to plan and implement safe Medical Assistant care to multiple clients. 

    Standard: Critical thinking ability sufficient for clinical judgment and professional behavior.

    Examples: 

    • Maintain confidentiality

    • Identify cause-effect relationships in clinical situations

    • Display the ability to identify problems and report to the appropriate supervisor

    • Prioritize and flex with change

    • Follow a process from start to finish

    Function: Interpersonal skills 

    Standard: Demonstrate positive and collaborative interpersonal abilities sufficient to interact with individuals, families, and groups from a variety of backgrounds. 

    Examples:

    • Establish rapport with patients/families, Cate staff/faculty, and coworkers from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. 

    • Be sensitive to the needs of others

    • Triages students

    • Reconciliation of HC Medication Stock charges, Medvan charges, and credit card monthly statements with submittal to the Business Office 

      • Assists nursing staff with PRN OTC medication administration

    • Attends 50% of Health Services staff meetings in person 

    Function: Conduct oneself safely in the working environment

    Standard: The clinical medical assistant work environment is indoors in an office/clinical setting. The work environment in the medical office is subject to frequent interruptions. Safety for the Medical Assistant is provided in the form of personal protective equipment and barrier precautions. Demonstration of utilization of safety precautions is integral to the role. 

    Examples:

    • Wears PPE appropriately and as needed when working with potentially hazardous specimens and infectious individuals

    • Cleans, changes linens, and disinfects resting room spaces after no longer occupied by student(s)

    Function: Physical Abilities and Requirements

    Standards and Examples:

    • Repetitive motion of upper body required for extended use of computer and telephone

    • Major activities of this job include frequent walking, standing, and light physical effort performed on a level surface. Some carrying, lifting up to 40 pounds, kneeling, bending, reaching, and squatting are involved in the medical office. 

    • The functionality of our Health Center requires the Medical Assistant to use a computer and telephone and employ listening, writing, and organizational skills.

    • Administer CPR

    Function: Miscellaneous/Additional Medical Assistant Responsibilities:

    • Updates student tracking systems in real-time when at the desk

    • Attends school-wide assembly 

    • Pick-up prescriptions and supplies from various locations

    • Drive students to appointments including but not limited to Radiology, Lab, Emergency Room, Doctor Appointments, and chaperone while they are there

    • Performs inventory, and updates documentation accordingly

    • Performs symptomatic testing as needed
