Temporary Lower/Middle School Music Teacher

    Bentley School is a K-12 co-educational, independent day school located on two campuses in Oakland (K-8) and Lafayette (9-12), California.     This position will be covering for a teacher on a temporary leave of absence for the period of January 6 through March 7, 2025.

    Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

     

          Teaching music to students in kindergarten through fifth grade including vocal instruction, training with classroom instruments, and general musicianship, including theory, composition and music history.

          Assisting with Middle School music electives

          Creating a positive learning environment where students thrive

          Utilizing repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary

          Planning, implementing, and assessing grade-level curriculum

          Preparing students for winter and spring concerts

          Participating in all aspects of Bentley’s character education curriculum

          Assisting in the planning and execution of Friday K-5 assemblies

          Collaborating regularly with the grade-level teachers and other specialists

          Attending regular Lower School faculty and grade-level meetings, as well as art department meetings weekly

          Communicating effectively with parents through class webpages, and report card comment writing

     

    Qualifications

          Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in music and a minimum of two years of teaching experience

          Ability to sing and play piano and additional various musical instruments

          Knowledge of a variety of music styles, repertoire, and teaching methodologies

          Experience in Orff-Schulwerk methodology or Kodaly preferred

          Ability and willingness to work with students in large group settings using multiple teaching methods to reach a broad range of students

          Desire to continually examine one’s practice with the goal to improve student learning

          Excellent interpersonal, writing, and communication skills

          Experience in innovative course design, planning, implementation, and assessment

     

    Pay Range:

    Bentley uses a competitive salary scale, which takes into account experience, education, and skill level. The salary scale for this position ranges from $69,525 for teachers with no prior teaching experience to $140,000 for teachers with over 40 years of prior experience. 

     

    Temporary or part-time teachers are compensated on the same scale, pro-rated for their percentage or term of employment.
