Grade School Woodworking Teacher

    General Description

    The San Francisco Waldorf Grade School is seeking a part-time Woodworking Teacher to start in August 2025.

    The position of the Woodworking Teacher is a 0.5FTE salaried position, teaching eight-eleven woodworking periods per week.  

    The Woodworking Teacher will be an experienced grade school teacher with experience working with fourth through eighth graders, demonstrates knowledge of the Waldorf woodworking curriculum, has completed a Bachelor’s degree, and preferably Waldorf Training. A love of teaching and a knowledge of /or interest in Waldorf education is required.

    Teaching Responsibilities

    Teaching duties include preparations for your classes, including preparation/clean-up of the classroom as necessary, constant evaluation of student progress, well versed in related safety practices, and discipline during class. The teacher should have a syllabus completed by the second week of classes. The teacher will also be responsible for taking daily attendance and providing a narrative evaluation for each student at the end of the year. The narrative evaluations and grades are to be turned into the office one week after the final day of school.

    OTHER TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Meetings— Attend weekly subject teacher meetings, grade school faculty meetings, quarterly faculty Participate in all school faculty meetings at the beginning of the school year, in August, and at the end of the school year, in June, at both the GS and HS.  Attend faculty in-service days
    • Festivals— Assist with all assembly and festival preparations on teaching days including Shepherd’s Play, Graduation, Back to School Night and Outreach Events
    • Substitution—Substitute during the main lesson as requested on teaching days (short term). Teachers are expected to be available for more duties when teaching fewer periods
    • Observations—All subject teachers are encouraged to attend and observe at least two main lesson classes per year in classes that you teach 
    • Mentoring— The Woodworking Teacher should meet with their mentor teacher before the school year begins to clearly define and discuss goals, expectations, workload, responsibilities, and performance evaluation. In addition, the Woodworking Teacher should share course syllabi, relevant materials, and information pertaining to the curriculum.  The Woodworking Teacher is required to meet weekly with the mentor to engage in an on-going dialogue about program goals, curriculum and to address any questions or concerns that arise during the week. 
    • Street Duties and Recess Duties—Supervise up to nine dismissal or recesses.
    • Budget—Manage budget and supplies for the Woodworking program.
    • Committees— Participate in committee work after 1-2 years of teaching.
    • Maintain Classroom/Office/Workspace—Maintain all materials and equipment for woodworking and circus programs and store equipment in an organized manner.
    • Mid-Year and End of Year Reports—The Woodworking Teacher writes reports for woodworking students semi-annually for all grades classes.  This report is a characterization of the student’s thinking, feeling and willing. However, the approach that is used to address these three aspects of the child’s development changes as the child goes through the grades. Student reports contain a course description and the student’s performance in the class.   

    SCHEDULE

    School Year:  Faculty members are expected to be available to work on assigned teaching days from the start of the school year until the end as defined by the all-school calendar.  Faculty members are expected to be in town and available for meetings, starting mid-August with the all-school faculty meetings and to be in town and available for end of year meetings, the week after 8th grade graduation.

    Benefits and Compensation:  

    This is a 0.5FTE, part-time, salaried position.  Benefits include dental insurance, life insurance, flexible spending plans, retirement plan (employer contributions begin after one year of employment), and pro-rated (based on 0.5FTE) tuition remission for eligible dependents in our Preschool - Grade 12 program (Staff fees apply). There is no medical insurance. The full annual salary range is $60K - $95K, depending on training and experience. The salary will be prorated for less than a full 1 FTE.   Salaries are paid on a 12-month schedule.

    Physical Requirements and Work Environment

    • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.

    • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including heat and cold

    • Regularly sitting or standing 4-8 hours
