    Position Summary

    Santa Catalina School, a nationally recognized PreK-12 independent Catholic school in Monterey, California, is currently seeking a temporary, full-time Human Resources Generalist. This position will cover a leave of absence through July 2025 and may transition into a permanent position. The HR Generalist is the primary person responsible for HR matters at Santa Catalina School, including but not limited to: onboarding and offboarding employees, administering employee benefit programs and leaves, developing policies and procedures, and being the main point of contact for employees’ queries on HR-related matters.

    Position Description

    Under the direction of the Chief Finance and Operations Officer, the temporary Human Resources Generalist is responsible for taking on a wide range of HR functions and projects. The ideal candidate is competent in handling different human resources responsibilities and has the professional experience to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. This position is responsible for ensuring that HR policies, procedures, and programs are implemented effectively and in accordance with the school’s goals and objectives. They must ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations and work to improve the overall employee experience. The HR Generalist works closely with hiring managers to attract and retain the highest caliber faculty and staff. They are responsible for coordinating all benefit plans at the school, including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, workers’ compensation insurance, and an employee assistance program. The HR Generalist works closely with the AP/Payroll Coordinator to ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll on a bi-monthly basis and ensures employee information is accurate and up to date across all HR systems and platforms. The HR Generalist is a key partner to the Head of School in addressing employment issues such as employee discipline, leaves of absence, employment conflicts, and performance issues. The ability to provide sound, timely, and confidential advice and direction regarding employee matters is key to success in this position.

    Essential Responsibilities

           Administer compensation and benefit plans including workers’ compensation

           Assist in talent acquisition and recruitment processes

           Conduct employee onboarding and offboarding

           Help organize training and development initiatives, including volunteer management processes

           Provide support to employees in various HR-related topics such as leaves, compensation, and benefits

           Promote HR programs to create an efficient and conflict-free workplace and help to resolve issues when they arise

           Assist in development and implementation of human resource policies

           Undertake tasks around performance management

           Organize employee performance reviews

           Maintain employee files and records in electronic and paper form

           Enhance job satisfaction by resolving issues promptly, applying new benefits, and organizing team-building activities

           Coordinate open enrollments, changes, and training for employee benefit programs

           Assist with payroll processing

           Conduct or acquire background checks and employee eligibility verification

           Reinforce policies, rules, and procedures to ensure employees’ safety

           Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal labor laws and regulations

    Other Responsibilities

    Qualifications

           Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field

           3-5 years experience as an HR Generalist

           Additional HR trainings or certifications a plus

           A commitment to the mission and identity of Santa Catalina School

           A desire to participate fully in the Santa Catalina community

           Successful completion of a LiveScan criminal background check as required by law

    Competencies

           Strong knowledge of employment/labor laws, particularly California labor laws

           Strong knowledge of Google Workspace and all related applications, as well as Microsoft Office programs

           Knowledge of ADP payroll/timekeeping system a plus

           Excellent communication and people skills

           Aptitude in problem-solving

           Desire to work as a team with a results-driven approach

           Excellent verbal and written skills

           Approachable and welcoming demeanor

           Cultural competence and enthusiasm for working with a diverse and dynamic community

           Strong interpersonal skills, including good listening, humor, tact, intuition, and confidentiality

           Strong organizational and record-keeping skills and digital literacy

           Ability to assess and respond to the needs of the school and act as a representative of the school

           Ability to function well under stress

    Supervisory Responsibilities (if any)

    This position does not supervise anyone.

    Working Conditions and Compensation

           Work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods of time each day

           Ability to work in various positions, including, but not limited to, standing, bending over, crouching, sitting, reaching, driving (a cart) for extended periods of time, and needing to lift up to 25 lbs.

           Work in a school environment with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and people

           Santa Catalina School offers competitive insurance and retirement benefits

           Salary Range: $65,000–$80,000 depending on experience
