Science and Technology Teacher, Grades 4-6
The John Thomas Dye School, an independent K-6 school located in Los Angeles, is currently seeking a full-time Science and Technology Co-Teacher for Grades 4-6. JOB SUMMARY: The Grade 4-6 inSTED (Innovation, Science, Technology, Engineering & Design) Co-Teacher provides instructional strategies and skills that will enable students to master the skills which foster best practices in science, technology, engineering, and design, with a knowledge base and passion for teaching students. JTD's instead program is an interdisciplinary program with co-teaching for science classes and the addition of a 3rd teacher who is a technology integration specialist for technology classes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Science/Technology Specialist:
● Plan and implement an enriched, challenging and developmentally appropriate integrated curriculum including science, technology, engineering, and design in collaboration with inSTED Team
● Demonstrate the ability to model, deliver, and craft rich student-centered, innovative learning experiences around Science, Technology, Engineering, and Design
● Demonstrate fundamental knowledge of the connection between technology, engineering, science, and other fields of study
● Evaluate student work, both formative and summative assessments, benchmarks and other assessments, to guide instructional planning and promote student success
● Maintain awareness of best practices science education and in educational technology
● Familiarity with Amplify Science curriculum a bonus
Co-Teaching:
● Work in partnership with other 4-6 inSTED co-teacher and K-6 technology integration specialist, modeling consistent effective teaching with technology, engagement, lesson plan design, use of technology, and online tools
● Utilize best instructional practices, methods, materials, and technology
● Hold students to high standards, allowing for differentiation among learning styles
● Demonstrate a repertoire of effective and engaging instructional strategies that meet the needs of all students
● Communicate on a regular basis with Co-Teacher to discuss student progress
● Relate to and communicate well with students, parents, administration, and staff
● Attend all department, curricular, and faculty meetings
Classroom Environment:
● Provide a positive and safe environment for students physically and emotionally that reflects developmentally appropriate classroom management strategies
● Support the academic and social-emotional needs of students, including participating in the development and implementation of learning or success plans as needed
Professional Learning:
● Seek knowledge of current instructional theories and best practices and demonstrate a commitment to professional growth by participating in Professional Development opportunities
Professional Responsibilities:
● Model professional and ethical standards and 5C’s behavior (Caring, Consideration, Common Sense, Cooperation, and Courtesy) when interacting with students, parents, and colleagues
● Exercise excellent writing skills to communicate with colleagues, students, and families and produce detailed narratives regarding student progress
● Collaborate and communicate effectively with students, parents, administration, staff, and if applicable, outside professionals
● Participate in the overall care of students through duties such as morning carpool checkin, recess supervision, and afternoon checkout
● Participate in parent-teacher conferences, parent nights, open house, admissions events, and other events outside contractual hours at the request of the administration
● Support one or more Upper School clubs or activities
● Other duties as assigned by the Upper School Head or Head of School
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE and QUALIFICATIONS:
● Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, education, or related field
● Master’s Degree or Credential in Science, Technology, STEAM, or education preferred
● Minimum of 2-3 years of classroom teaching experience, preferably in an independent school setting
● Strong understanding of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards
● Expert level of technology and 21st century learning understanding and application
● Deep knowledge of content standards, effective instructional strategies, and assessment driven instruction
● Strong Google Apps for Education skills (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Sites, etc.)
● Technology literate and comfortable with acquiring new technology skills; a bonus if any experience with the following tools: 3D printing, Tynkercad, Makey-Makey, Kodable, Tynker, BeeBot, and MinecraftEDU
● Strong understanding of academic, social, and emotional development of children
● Strong understanding and use of multiple forms of assessment to inform and drive instruction
● Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
● Strong organization and time-management skills
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team

The faculty salary range is determined by years of experience and education with a range from $70,000 to $120,000.
