    Job Description:

    The 8th Grade Advanced Topics Teacher will oversee the development and delivery of Advanced Topics courses for 8th graders based on the educator’s areas of interest and expertise.  Suggested courses that Redwood Day is interested in providing include topics such as:

    • Engineering

    • Coding and Gaming

    • Robotics

    • Leadership

    • Debate

    • Creative Writing

    • Poetry

    • Journalism 

    • Business & Entrepreneurship

    • Investing and Money Management 

    • Artificial Intelligence (AI)

    • Photography and Videography

    • Digital Art

    • Biotechnology

    • Advanced Math: Geometry


    Redwood Day is open to other Advanced Topics courses and will work with the teacher to determine offerings for the 2025-26 school year. 

    The educator will partner closely with the other Middle School teachers to develop and implement a comprehensive, effective, and cohesive curriculum for 8th grade elective courses. The ideal candidate will have experience working with middle school students and appreciate the opportunity to work with an age group that is experiencing lots of transitions in three short years. They will also be a strong collaborator with other teachers and community members, have a strong commitment to meeting the learning needs of each student, a teaching style that supports differentiated instruction, and an interest in building a community.  


    Primary Duties:

    • Design and implement an appropriate elective curriculums consistent with the Redwood Day philosophy, including differentiated and data-driven instruction

    • May serve as an advisor or co-advisor, depending on need, to a group 10-15  students supporting their overall growth and development; as part of advisory role, will hold 

    • Establish a safe and inclusive environment for all students formal student/teacher/guardian conferences twice a year for each student, and any other conferences that may be needed 

    • Collaborate with teachers in other Middle School grades and Specialist teachers Collaborate with Learning Services, Counselor, Middle School Deans and outside professionals to assess and support students displaying academic or behavior difficulties including attendance at regular student support meetings

    • Communicate student achievements through written progress reports at designated grading periods 

    • Use available technology to supplement learning experiences

    • Organize the classroom space, manage materials, and adhere to supplies budget

    • Plan field trips and classroom events

    • Maintain regular communication with parents & guardians regarding student individual and group progress

    • Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of student behavior and progress 

    • Supervise assigned recess and lunch duties

    • Attend regular faculty and staff meetings, along with School-wide events such as in-services, prospective student events and Back to School Night 

    • Actively participate in the evaluation process regarding school programs and professional growth, the selection of curriculum and scheduling of school activities, etc.

    • Actively participate in the testing and evaluation process for current and prospective students 

    • Attend the Middle School Outdoor Education overnight trip 

    • Facilitate activities during the daily community activity period including study hall, electives and homeroom/advisory 

    • Collaborate with team members to participate in school-wide events such as STEAM Fairs and other academic showcase opportunities 

    • Others duties as assigned


    This is a full-time position, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays), Monday - Friday, beginning August 2025.

    Essential Requirements:

    • Bachelor of Arts

    • Minimum of 3-5 years’ classroom teaching experience

    • Natural rapport with children and effective classroom management skills

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills     

    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity

    • Commitment to adhering to all Redwood Day policies and procedures

    • Experience using technology to support teaching and learning, including Google Classroom (preferred)

    • Teaching credential or Masters’ Degree (preferred)


    Compensation/Benefits:

    Redwood Day offers highly competitive compensation and benefits. The anticipated pay range the school reasonably expects to pay candidates for the Lower School Teacher is $70,658 to $112,758 annually, depending on factors such as experience and education.
