    About Parker:

    Parker is a coeducational independent day school in San Diego, California with 1,330 students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Founded in 1912, the school’s mission is “to create and inspire a diverse community of independent thinkers whose academic excellence, global perspective and strength of character prepare them to make a meaningful difference in the world.” Parker has two campuses: one in Mission Hills (Lower School, Junior Kindergarten - Grade 5), and a second in Linda Vista (Middle and Upper School, Grades 6 - 12).

    Job Description:

    To provide oversight and leadership for the Literacy curriculum in the Lower School, ensuring vertical and horizontal alignment, and inclusive curriculum development. The literacy coach will support, mentor, and lead training for teachers and will provide guidance on instruction and intervention/enrichment services for Grade JK-5 students. The literacy coach will work in close collaboration with the Student Success Team, Lower School Administration, Directors of Curriculum, Educational Technology Coordinator, the Office of DEIB, and the 6-12 English Department Chair.

    Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

         Coordinate and facilitate the JK-5 literacy program including review of and alignment within and across grade levels

         Coordinate and collaborate with the Directors of Curriculum and Instruction, Director of DEIB, 6-12 English Department to ensure a well-articulated and aligned JK-12 Scope and Sequence

         Facilitate and lead professional development for faculty and staff on incorporating culturally responsive instructional practices, understanding diverse student experiences, and addressing implicit bias in the classroom.

         Collaborate with teachers to analyze existing literacy curriculum for potential inequities and suggest modifications to better support diverse learners.

         Conduct classroom observations and provide demonstrations of best practices, methods, and materials (i.e., coaching and co-teaching) to improve/enhance instruction 

         Collaborate with teachers to develop lessons and assessments of student learning that explicitly address proficiency levels; model effective strategies to use for diverse learners.

         Consult with grade-level teams to plan instruction and identify appropriate materials to be utilized for intervention or enrichment in the classroom

         Schedule, lead, and provide teacher training for benchmark screenings of literacy skills and literacy programs (DIBELS, Fundations, Heggerty, Geodes, Junior Great Books)

         Interpret and disseminate results from a variety of classroom assessments and other standardized testing measures (including ERBs)

         Analyze student achievement data to identify disparities in literacy skills across different student groups, highlighting areas where equity concerns exist and evaluating the effectiveness of literacy programs and instruction 

         Provide effective instructional coaching during planning sessions with teachers, modeling lessons, and conducting feedback sessions following lesson observations

         Collaborate with lower school leaders, DEIB Team, and Student Success Team to develop and implement school-wide literacy goals plans, including policies and procedures that promote equitable literacy practices.

         Lead parent education and workshops

    Qualifications:

         A degree (B.A., B.S., and Masters in Education or Reading)

         Minimum of three years teaching experience at the elementary level.

         Advanced certification/experience and specialization in culturally responsive literacy instruction

         Be familiar with independent, college preparatory school curriculum and have knowledge of National, State, and Content Area Standards in literacy for each grade level JK-8.

         Experience coaching teachers required (Minimum two years desired)

         Experience designing and delivering professional development required

         Knowledgeable in effective differentiation, equitable practices, and the role of culturally relevant curriculum development and implementation.

         Ability to work with a team of colleagues, classroom teachers, and parents

         Excellent oral and written communication skills

         Detail oriented

         Familiarity with Mac programs and Google Suite

    Salary and Benefits:

    Parker is committed to attracting and retaining the highest quality faculty and staff through a substantial compensation plan, including competitive salary, TIAA retirement benefits and full medical/dental coverage. Individual salary is negotiable depending on years of experience and educational background.

    Salary Range: $85,000 - $99,000 per year

    The actual salary will be determined by the candidate’s educational degree and their years of full-time teaching experience.  The starting salary listed reflects this position’s minimum experience and educational requirements; the ending salary listed represents the top of the salary structure for this position. Most candidates can expect to enter in the lower to middle section of this salary range, depending on their specific experience and education.
