SUMMARY
The Accountant is able to perform difficult complex and analytical work with high levels of accuracy. A successful candidate is a reliable professional who is collaborative, organized, and able to prioritize and juggle many tasks simultaneously. This Accountant is part of the team responsible for the school’s general accounting function and oversight of internal controls. This person performs general accounting functions including A/P, A/R, processing deposits, preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and assisting in the monthly closing processes.

RELATIONSHIPS
The Accountant reports to the Chief Financial Officer. This position interacts with administrators, faculty, staff, parents, vendors, outside agencies, and auditors. This position is an integral member of the accounting team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Job responsibilities are assigned by the Chief Financial Officer who may, in their sole discretion, alter, add to, or eliminate job assignments at any time, with or without prior notice. The Accountant is knowledgeable of accounting standards, audit, and internal control protocols, and all applicable federal and state statutes, familiar with the operation of the department, and is proficient with the technology designed to support that operation. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in month-end close activities, including reconciliations of accounts such as cash, investments, prepaid, fixed assets, leases, accrued expenses, and inter-company receivables/payables.
- Record monthly investment activity.
- Verify bank deposits and prepare deposit reports.
- Assist in annual Audit and 990 Tax preparation by providing accurate schedules of information, particularly in regard to pledge and gift accounting, including planned gifts and split-interest agreements, endowment accounting, fixed asset accounting, bond accounting, construction accounting, and budget management.
- Prepare certain quarterly and annual filings with state, federal, and local agencies.
- Assist in preparing monthly departmental financial reports and reconciliations, as well as other reports or projects as directed by the CFO.
- Maintain coordination of database activities between Blackbaud modules and banking activities.
- Assist with issuing, monitoring, and tracking the annual enrollment contracts for new and re- enrolling families.
- Perform research, reconciliation, and other general accounting tasks as requested and necessary to meet department reporting deadlines.
- Appropriately and effectively communicate with vendors, faculty, staff, and parents as necessary.
- Stay up-to-date on changes in accounting regulations, best practices, and industry trends, and proactively identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Master’s degree and/or CPA certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Experience in independent schools or similar environments is highly preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in accounting software, spreadsheets, and data analysis tools. Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge.
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Proven success at working collaboratively and efficiently on a creative, diverse, and goal-oriented team.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy, with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Self-motivated, ability to multi-task, excellent work habits, including a willingness to work the hours necessary to get the job done, especially when important deadlines cause greater than normal departmental pressures.
- Able to make quick decisions, take initiative, and prioritize tasks.
- Knowledge of GAAP, IFRS, and other relevant accounting standards.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
A valid California Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record is required. A criminal background check is required and must be successfully completed before employment can begin.

COMPENSATION PHILOSOPHY
Anticipated pay range: $60,000 - $100,000 (salary will be dependent on experience, skills, and qualifications. Classification will be dependent on level of position).
